Welcome to the Department of Computer Science at Tennessee
Technological University. Now is a great time to study computer
science. Whether the economy is weak or strong, the skills we teach
are needed in almost every industry and every sector of the economy.
We are proud to announce that we have recently appointed Dr. Stephen
Scott as our Stonecipher/Boeing Distinguished Professor of Computing.
This position includes faculty appointments in both Computer Science
and Computer Engineering and a position as a senior research scientist
at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Our growing department has over two hundred students from across the
Southeast and from multiple foreign countries, and we offer three
programs of study for students interested in computer-related careers.
Undergraduate students can choose between our ABET-accredited software
design and development concentration and our information technology
concentration, and graduate students can obtain a Master's degree in
Internet-Based Computing with specializations in Distributed and
Parallel Computing, Information Assurance and Security, and Knowledge
Discovery. Our courses also provide the core programming competency
for students in a variety of disciplines including Computer
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Web Design, Physics, and Mathematics.
Both undergraduate and graduate computer science students have
opportunities to participate in research funded by diverse
organizations. The agencies funding recent grants and contracts
include the National Science Foundation, the Department of Homeland
Security, the Department of Energy, the National Institutes for Health, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Our research students also contribute to publications and conference
presentations. Additionally, we encourage our students to join a
student chapter of our professional organization, ACM (the Association
for Computing Machinery). We have both a traditional ACM chapter and
a chapter of ACM-W to support women in computing, and we recently
formed and support a Unix Users Group. Many of our undergraduates also
work on our department's system administration team.
