Mission Statement
Guiding Principles:
Excellence in computer science education is our primary goal. Every member of this department, by their dedicated tutelage and guidance, must prepare all of our students for lifelong, self-directed learning and technological leadership in society. We must pursue excellence in all endeavors with a strong belief in our intellectual and academic freedom. We recognize ourselves as public servants of the State of Tennessee and believe in promoting excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, creative endeavors, and public service, with special emphasis on community and economic development. We strongly encourage and support academic, professional and personal development. Our conduct must be characterized by integrity, honesty, and the ethical use of technology. We strongly believe in Tennessee Technological University's mission to broaden and enhance its unique role as the state's only technological university.
Mission:
The Computer Science Department at Tennessee Technological University provides an undergraduate program in Computer Science grounded in fundamental principles of computing. These include the necessary skills for data structures and algorithmic design, as well as hardware, software and integrated applications design. We prepare our students to apply these principles creatively and responsibly. We also prepare our students to exhibit a high degree of professionalism and a clear understanding of the consequences involved in the violation of ethical and/or legal issues in computer science. We encourage the generation and dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Our students are guided and encouraged to apply their knowledge for scientific and technological development.
Vision:
We will be a leader in computer science education in the State of Tennessee, attracting its motivated students. Our graduates will be prepared to succeed and contribute to society. We will strive to be recognized for our scholarly endeavors, meeting the technological and scientific needs of local industry, government and society. We will provide a high-quality education for our graduates, helping them to learn and pursue lifelong scholarly activities.
Our Supporters:
Many of our graduates have found employment within the mid-south region. A number of employers, such as Martin Marietta, Tennessee Eastman, Texas Instruments, Siemens, Intergraph, Sverdrup, Naval Surface Warfare Center, and Milliken aggressively recruit our graduates on a regular basis. Several employers have provided favorable feedback both on our program and our graduates. Several employers of our graduates often return to hire more of our students. This supports our vision of providing successful computer professionals to industry and society. In addition, new employment prospects have developed in recent years with several local and national companies such as Boeing, McDonnell-Douglas, Harris, Hughes Electronics, and Southwest Research Institute.
